Recientemente tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con Aria DeMaris una actriz super talentosa de origen Salvadoreño quien vive en Canada y quien es ademas parte del elenco de la segunda temporada de Lost in Space en Netflix participando como Izabel Azevedo. 1. En tu carrera artística ¿es importante la fama y la fortuna? ¿O es solo por amor al arte? La lucha constante de los artistas.
Creo que realmente debes amar tu arte. Sin ese amor no es facil impulsarte para avanzar, especialmente en una industria tan subjetiva y desafiante. Este es un arte que exige respeto, requiere honestidad y humildad, debes ser compasivo y mantener tu integridad artística. Sin embargo, creo en el balance, y que el dinero y el reconocimiento pueden ayudarte a avanzar en tu carrera. Ser bien remunerado, te brinda los medios para vivir una mejor vida y permite que te concentres en tu carrera, y con el reconocimiento llegas a tener mas audiencia, la cual a la vez puede brindarle mas respeto y trabajo a cualquier artista.
2. Cuéntame de tu experiencia viviendo en El Salvador ¿ha regresado alguna vez?
Nací en El Salvador, pero solo pasé un año y medio allí antes de que mi familia y yo nos mudaramos a Canada. Todavía no he regresado, ya que mis viajes parecen llevarme a otros lugares, pero estoy planeando regresar pronto!
3. ¿A quién admiras y por qué?
Mucha gente de cineastas independientes, escritores, directores, productores, equipo y, por supuesto, actores. Los que más me inspiran son aquellos apasionados por su trabajo, comprometidos, humildes y con quienes trabajar es una alegría. Tengo una larga lista de personas que me inspiran y trataré de reducirla; Robert DeNiro, Meryl Streep, Alejandro G. Inñárritu, David Fincher, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Lupita N’yongo, Sam Rockwell, Cate Blanchett, Coen brothers, Cilian Murphy, Morgan Freeman. Pero también tengo un profundo respeto y admiración por las mujeres resistentes y valientes que no tienen miedo de mostrar su vulnerabilidad y partes “feas” de sí mismas. Eso es lo que las hace tan humanos y fáciles de relacionar. Admiro especialmente a Kathy Bates, Pam Grier, Melissa Leo, Francis McDormand, Judi Dench, etc.
4, ¿Quién es tu super héroe?
Mis heroes van desde personas en la industria hasta las que están completamente fuera de ella. Tengo un profundo respeto por Jane Goodall, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King y muchos otros a lo largo de la historia que los veo como “superhéroes.” Los que tienen empatía, sabiduría y desafiaron el sistema. Pero también creo que hay muchos héroes que pasan desapercibidos, que han hecho tanto por nuestro mundo y no obtienen el reconocimiento y el respeto que merecen, como Irena Sendler y tantos otros. Creo que las “personas comunes” son héroes, aquellos que han arriesgado sus vidas por nuestra libertad, seguridad y para mejorar el mundo. Mi madre es una heroína, los bomberos y voluntarios que ayudaron con los incendios en la Amazonia y en Australia también son super héroes.
5. Cuéntame de Izabel Azevedo y cómo lograste incluirte entre el reparto de la segunda temporada de Lost in Space.
Hice la primera audición para el papel y me llamaron nuevamente para una segunda audición. Poco después los ejecutivos de la red me confirmaron el papel de Izabel, quien es un codificadora de naves espaciales que ayuda a la familia Robinson con las reparaciones de su nave. También es esposa de Aubrey Azevedo y madre de la joven Elise que se hace amiga de Will Robinson. Me emocionó interpretar a una mujer, esposa y madre inteligente que intenta sobrevivir en un mundo extraño y peligroso con su familia. Todos los personajes están tratando de sobrevivir, la mayoría coopera entre sí, y aquellos con familias luchan para darles a sus hijos una vida mejor y la oportunidad de un futuro real sin peligro. Creo que Izabel es identificable, como una persona fuerte y hábil, con un trabajo complejo, y que combina un lado tierno y maternal al manejar la vida familiar. Pensé que era un movimiento progresivo por parte de los escritores tener una pareja casada del mismo sexo con una hija pequeña en el programa. ¡Es el futuro después de todo! También siempre estoy feliz de interpretar a un personaje latina e Izabel es Brasileña.
6. ¿Es el sufrimiento y el dolor parte de tu inspiración en el proceso creativo? ¿Hay que sufrir para crear?
No necesariamente, pero definitivamente te brinda profundidad y conocimiento de una persona y su historia. Creo que el contraste es bueno, y aquellos que han estado en la oscuridad pueden ofrecer luz al mundo. Ese es uno de los aspectos positivos que pienso cuando me ocurre algo “malo”, o cuando pienso en tiempos difíciles en mi pasado. Doy gracias por la experiencia porque sé que me ha hecho una mejor persona, o me ha dado una nueva oportunidad para trabajar en mí misma, y también es combustible para mi arte, ya sea actuar, escribir, pintar o producir. Siempre creí en las palabras de Carrie Fisher “Toma tu corazón roto y conviértelo en arte”. También podemos contribuir al mundo al observar nuestras propias heridas y aprender a sanar, y podemos ayudar a enseñar a otros a sanar sus heridas también. Esos momentos dolorosos me han ayudado a convertirme en una mejor persona y actor y continuarán haciéndome más fuerte, más sabia y más amorosa. Podemos mirar los tiempos de oscuridad con introspección y humildad para disfrutar plenamente y estar agradecidos cuando lleguen los momentos felices. Y en el lado opuesto, tiene que haber momentos de luz y alegría para volver a estar agradecidos y recordarnos que hay que tener esperanza durante los tiempos oscuros y difíciles. También creo sinceramente en las bendiciones disfrazadas, lo que te hace sufrir puede convertirse rápidamente en alegría y alivio.
7. Cuéntame algo muy personal que no hayas comentado antes y que muy pocas personas saben.
En un momento de mi vida creí que sería buena como paramédico. ¡Empecé a ir a la escuela, y rápidamente me di cuenta de que no tenía estómago para eso! Parecía tenerlo para ayudar a los animales, así que empecé a trabajar como asistente veterinario en hospitales de animales antes de sumergirme en la escuela de cine y la actuación. Además, si tuviera que elegir, en mi próxima vida me gustaría volver como compositora, o cantante de jazz o de ópera.
8. ¿Ha considerado dirigir o producir alguna película o serie?
Estoy interesada en dirigir algún día, pero creo que no será por algún tiempo. Realmente me gustaría seguir sumergiéndome en la actuación e involucrarme más en escribir y producir antes de que llegue ese día. En este momento estoy aprendiendo a producir ya que realmente disfruto aprendiendo sobre los diversos trabajos detrás de la cámara y cada etapa de producción. Ser capaz de conectarse y ver lo que cada persona aporta a una película da nueva vida, curiosidad y un nuevo respeto al proceso de realización de la película. Soy un amante de la historia y la guerra, por lo que The Bagley Boys es una producción británica que estoy produciendo y es un gran proyecto para mí. Es una historia de valentía, amistad y angustia, que sigue la vida de un grupo de hombres y enfermeras, y sus familias, desde 1914 hasta 1918, lidiando con las dificultades de la vida en guerra, el dolor de la separación de los seres queridos y la comprensión de que no todos llegarán a casa. Creo que la historia nunca debe olvidarse, y como han pasado más de 100 años desde la guerra más catastrófica que el mundo haya visto, ahora es más importante que nunca que recordemos a estas personas, sus historias y los sacrificios que hicieron, así que estoy emocionada de ayudar a contar esta historia. Aparte de eso, también estoy emocionada de anunciar que he explorado escribir aún más, con un “thriller” alocado que recientemente termine de filmar en Toronto. Actualmente se encuentra en postproducción y se está preparando para llegar a los festivales a fin de año. No puedo decir mucho al respecto en este momento, pero es una historia arenosa y exagerada con personajes extravagantes y estilizados. La idea de la película provino del director Ryan M. Andrews, y con la mayoría del elenco siendo mujeres, nuestro productor “The Win” nos unió y pude escribir el guión, dando una fuerte presencia femenina a la historia y diálogo. Es realmente emocionante para mí porque hay muchos personajes femeninos fuertes en la película.
9. Cuéntame de tu experiencia como “coaching” (instructora) de dialectos y ¿qué fue lo que te inspiró para dedicarte a esto?
Mis profesores de música me decían que tenía un oído musical, y creo que eso realmente me ayudó a convertirme en instructora de dialectos. Además, mi conocimiento y amor por la música y las culturas, ayudó a despertar mi pasión por los acentos. Hace unos años, estaba tomando un curso sobre acentos, y aprendí de mi maestro que yo tenía un don para eso. Estaba fascinada por el origen de los idiomas, y gradualmente mejoré mi dominio en varios dialectos. Pronto comencé a trabajar como aprendiz de instructores de dialectos de renombre en América del Norte y el Reino Unido, y luego lancé mi negocio en Londres. Sin embargo, lo que realmente me encantó, fue poder infundir confianza en tantos actores. Verlos liberarse de las limitaciones de aprender un acento, y sentirse totalmente seguros de sumergirse en su actuación me dio una inmensa sensación de satisfacción. ¿Ser bueno en algo, ayudar a los demás, sentirse satisfecha y ser remunerada por ello? ¡No me lo tienes que pedir dos veces jaja!
10. ¿Qué tipo de ayuda voluntaria has hecho y por qué es importante?
He trabajado con personas con necesidades especiales, niños, adultos mayores y animales, pero más recientemente me concentré en los loros, ya que soy gran amante de ellos y las aves en general, ademas de tener los míos propios. Creo que debemos ser amables los unos con los otros y con este mundo, ya que es nuestro hogar y nos brinda literalmente todo lo que conocemos, y a todos los que amamos. Tenemos la responsabilidad de apreciarlo, cuidarlo y respetarlo, junto con todos sus habitantes.
11. ¿Cómo conseguiste a Rocky y si lo llevas contigo a los sets de filmación? Al parecer los animales juegan un papel muy
importante en tu vida ¿no es así?
Rocky fue el primer lovebird que nació en la casa de mi madre. Tuvimos otros durante algunos años antes de eso y dimos la bienvenida a un par de nuevos, y un año después nos encontramos con una sorpresa de huevos en su jaula. Fue uno de los bebés nacidos del nido. Es un periquito muy especial, único y muy querido. No es solo su ternura o su personalidad divertida, sino cuánto amor tiene para dar y cuanto amor tenemos para devolverle. No lo llevo a los sets de filmación, pero tengo a mi loro más grande, Merlin, con quien viajo, y de vez en cuando lo llevo a sets de filmación, accesorios de vestuario y a mi trailer. Tengo un gran amor y respeto por los animales. Son tan hermosos e inocentes, y no juzgan, solo están presentes y viven sus vidas, hay mucho que podemos aprender de ellos. También me enseñan a amar aún más de lo que pensaba que era posible.
12. ¿Cuáles son tus planes para el 2020?
¡Tengo muchos planes para 2020! Me mudaré nuevamente este año, yendo y viniendo entre New York y Toronto, terminando mi primer largometraje, escribiendo algunos guiones nuevos y trabajando en la serie DC Legends of Tomorrow un poco más. También tengo un juego de video en el que hice la voz del personaje principal, pero no puedo decir mucho al respecto en este momento. Soy una entusiasta de los viajes, así que tengo grandes planes de viaje este año, que incluyen; Italia, United Kingdom, Dinamarca, El Gran Cañón, Las Vegas, conocer mas de Canada, El Salvador y si hay tiempo me gustaría regresar a Cuba!
12 QUESTIONS AND ONE IN-DEPTH CONVERSATION WITH ARIA DEMARIS!
Recently we had the opportunity to talk with multi-talented Aria DeMaris, a beautiful Salvadorian born actress who is currently part of the Netflix show, Lost in Space. She plays Izabel Avezedo, a fearless, Brazilian, gay, spaceship coder. 1. In your career, is fame and fortune important? Or just the love for your art?
I believe you have to truly love your art. Without it there won’t be enough to propel you to move forward especially in such a subjective and challenging industry. This is an art that commands respect and requires truth and humility, you have to be compassionate and maintain your artistic integrity as well. However I do believe in balance, and that money and recognition can help advance your career. Being paid can allow you to fully focus on your career, giving it your all, and of course with recognition you can reach more audiences, which can bring more respect and work to any artist.
2. What was your experience like in El Salvador and have you been back?
I was born in El Salvador but only spent a year and a half there before my family and I moved away. I have not been back yet, as my travels seem to take me to so many other places, but I am planning to go back soon!
3. Who do you admire and why?
So many people from independent film makers, writers, directors, producers, crew and of course actors. Of course I admire people outside of the industry as well. But the ones who inspire me the most in the industry are those who are passionate about their work, humble, committed, and a pleasure to work with. I have a long list of people who inspire me like; Meryl Streep, Alejandro G. Inñárritu, David Fincher, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Lupita N’yongo, Joaquin Phoenix, Sam Rockwell, Cate Blanchett to name a few. But I also have a deep respect and admiration for resilient, fearless women who aren’t afraid to show their vulnerability and “ugly” parts of themselves. That’s what makes them so human and relatable. I especially admire Kathy Bates, Pam Grier, Melissa Leo, Francis Mcdormand, Judi Dench, etc.
4. Who are your superheroes?
My heroes range from people in the industry to totally seperate from it. I have a deep respect for Jane Goodall, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King jr, and many others throughout history I look at as “super heroes.” The ones who have empathy, wisdom and defied the system. But I also believe there are many heroes who go unnoticed, who have done so much for our world and don’t get the recognition and respect they deserve, like Irena Sendler and so many others. I believe “ordinary people” are heroes, those who’ve risk their lives for our freedom, safety, and to improve the world. My mom is a hero, the firefighters and volunteers who helped with the fires in the amazon and in Australia are also heroes.
5. You play Izabel Azevedo in the new season of Lost in Space. Can you tell me a little more about the role and how you attained it?
I auditioned for the role and was called back again for another audition. Shortly after I was confirmed for the role of Izabel from the Network executives. Izabel is a space ship coder on the resolute who helps the Robinson family with the reparations of their ship. She is also a wife to Aubrey Azevedo and mother to young Elise who befriends Will Robinson. I was thrilled to play a capable, intelligent woman, wife, and mother trying to survive in a strange and threatening world with her family. All the characters are trying to survive, most cooperate with each other, and those with families figh to give their children a better life, and a chance at a real future free from danger. I think Izabel is relatable as she is a strong, skilled person, with a complex job, combining a tender maternal side managing family life. I thought it was a progressive move on the writers parts to have a same-sex married couple with a young daughter in the show. It is the future after all! I’m also always happy to play a Latin character and Izabel is Brazilian.
6. Is pain and suffering part of your inspiration with your creative process? Do you feel you need to suffer to create art?
Not necessarily but it I believe suffering brings awakening, and it definitely gives you depth and insight into a person and their story. I believe contrast is good, and those who have been in darkness can offer a lot of light to the world. I always challenge myself to look at the bright side of any “bad” situation in my life. I give thanks for the experience as I know its an opportunity to work on myself, not to mention it is fuel for my art, whether it is acting, writing, painting, or producing. I always believed in Carrie Fishers words “Take your heart break and turn it into art.” I would also add that we can contribute to the world by taking a look at our own wounds and learning how to heal ourselves, so we can teach others how to heal their wounds as well. The painful times have helped shape me into a better person and actor and will continue to make me stronger, wiser and more loving. There are moments of light and joy to make us grateful, and remind us to have hope during the dark and hard times. And on the opposite side we can look at the darker times for introspection and humility. I also truly believe in blessings in disguises and what was once suffering can quickly turn to joy and relief.
7. Tell me something you have nevever mentioned and that most people wouldnt know about you.
At one point in my life I thought I could be good as a paramedic. I started going to school for it and quickly realized I didn’t have the stomach for it! I did seem to have it for helping animals so I used to work as a vet assistant at animal hospitals before I submersed myself in film school and acting. Also, if I had a choice, in my next life I would like to come back as a composer, or a jazz or opera singer.
8. Have you thought about directing or producing a series or film?
I am interested in directing one day but I think that wont be for sometime. I’d really like to continue learning more as an actor, writing and producer before that day comes. At the moment I am learning more about producing and really enjoy seeing how all the various jobs behind the camera work, and each stage of production. It helps being a new light, and breathes new life, curiosity and respect to the process of film making. I love history and war, so The Bagley Boys is a British production I am associate producing, and very much a passion project for me. It’s a story of bravery, friendship and heartache, following the lives of a group of men and nurses, along with their families from 1914 to 1918 dealing with the hardships of life at war, the pain of separation from loved ones, and the realization that not all of them will make it back home. I believe its important to always remember where we’ve come from, and as its been over 100 years since the most catastrophic war the world has ever seen, its even more important than ever that we remember these peoples stories and the sacrifices they made. I’m really excited to help tell this story. Apart from that, I’m also excited to announce a wild, grind-house thriller that recently wrapped shooting in Toronto and which I wrote. It’s currently in post production and getting ready to hit festivals at the end of the year. I can’t say much about it right now, but it’s a gritty, over the top story with quirky, stylized characters. The idea of the film came from the director Ryan M. Andrews, and our producer, Thet Win, put us in touch, so from Ryan’s idea I was able to write the script, giving a strong female presence to the story and dialogue as there are several tough, female characters in the film.
9. Tell me about your dialect coaching experience, what was it that inspired you to do it?
My music teachers would tell me I had a good ear, and I think that really helped my listening skills to set me on my way to become a dialect coach. I was attuned and sensitive to rhythm and sounds so that initially helped. My knowledge and love of music and cultures helped spark my passion for dialects too I think. A few years ago I was taking a course on dialects, and I learned a had a knack for it from my teacher there, he told me I should definitely pursue it further. I was always fascinated by the origin of languages, and so I gradually enhanced my proficiency in various dialects. Soon I started working as an apprentice to renowned dialect coaches in North America and the UK and later I launched my business in London. But I think what really sold me was the love I had for being able to instill confidence in actors. Seeing them free themselves from the constraints of learning an accent, and feeling totally confident to submerse themselves in their acting gave me an immense sense of fulfillment. Being good at something, helping others, while feeling fulfilled and being paid for it? You didn’t have to twist my arm!
10. What kind of volunteer work have you done and why is it important?
I have worked with people with special needs, kids, seniors, and animals, but most recently I focus on parrots as I am a huge parrot and bird lover, having parrots of my own. I believe we have to be kind to each other and this world, its the only home we’ve ever known, and it gives us literally everything and everyone we know and love. I believe in being kind to every living being and we as human beings who have been graced with all this world and everything it offers, have the responsibility to cherish, conserve, and respect it.
11. How did you get Rocky and do you take him with you to the filming sets? It seems like animals play a very role important in your life is that right?
Rocky was the first lovebird born in my mother’s house. He is a very special and unique little guy. It’s not just his sweet or his funny personality, but how much love he has to give, and how much love we have to give back to him. I don’t take him to filming sets, but I have my parrot, Merlin, with whom I travel with sometimes, and occasionally I take to film sets, wardrobe fittings and in my trailer. I do have a great love and respect for animals. Not only are they smart, beautiful and innocent, but they don’t judge, and live in the moment. They also teach me to love even more than I thought was possible. There is so much we can learn from animals and our world.
12. What are your plans for 2020?
I have a lot of plans for 2020! I’ll be moving again this year, going back and forth between New York and Toronto, finishing my first feature film, writing some new scripts, and working on the series DC Legends of Tomorrow some more. I also have a video game coming out that I did the voice over for but I am not able to say much about it at the moment. I’m a travel enthusiast so I have big travel plans that I’m excited about which include; Italy, UK, Denmark, The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, El Salvador, and if there’s time I’d love to go back to Cuba!
