SEXY DRONES FOR EVERYONE

ORAL and .ANGLE.REC. present:::
::::An Exploration In Drone Music
Saturday, November 18, 2006
SALA ROSSA, 4848, St-Laurent Blvd., Montreal, QC, Canada, H2T 1R6
Starring, for the first time ever in Quebec and Canada:
TROUM — Germany. Drone Records. Transgredient Records..ex-Maeror-Tri
The name TROUM (which is the ancient German translation for the English word “dream”) is looked on as essential among fans of drone music. The project became so notorious that their productions multiplied at an unstoppable rate, on numerous labels around the world. Same thing can be said about the now-defunct MAEROR TRI project, which had, among its members, Stefan ??Baraka[H]?? Knappe and Martin “GLIT[s]CH” Git, the two founders of TROUM. Also on stage with them will be Nina Kernicke. While MAEROR TRI was hailed as “the ultimate in ambient-drone”, TROUM decidedly keeps going in that direction, by pushing the envelope even farther in the exploration of oneiric world whose evocation is made possible through this music. TROUM has been a major influence on the work of many musicians of the drone, ambient-post-rock and even dark-ambient universes. Armed with their guitars and various sound processing modules, these instigators of intimist and spacious sound bubbles will get us vibrating in tune with the thousand and one ambiences where this path will lead us, a path with milestones (if there actually are such things) we don?t know yet. For this event, TROUM will literally become the interface between the audience and the world of dreams. The name of the programme is SHUTUN (in Persian language, “to be far away”).

AIDAN BAKER | Canada. Arcolepsy. Drone Records, Die Stadt, .Angle.Records.
A poet and essentially self-taught musician, Torontonian AIDAN BAKER also works with the guitar and a whole bunch of effects, by exploring the infinite deconstruction possibilities of the famed string instrument, which he totally reappropriates. Confessing a love for TROUM and MAEROR TRI’s music, AIDAN BAKER goes way way beyond a mere inspiration and emulation, by proposing a music with infinite nuances, as witnessed by the dozens and dozens of releases he has under his belt. Let us mention his affiliations with German labels DIE STADT and DRONE, A SILENT PLACE in Italy and, in Quebec, .ANGLE.REC. or PANOSPRIA, PERTIN_NCE and PETITE SONO. One could compare AIDAN BAKER’s musical corpus to a rainbow: he knows how to delve into soundloops that are rather luminous and light and then, drift towards more introspective and mysterious soundscapes to finally lead the listener towards definitely darker and bleaker realms, organic to the extreme. A more than textured expression of the drone
universe that is always captivating and enveloping.

TIM HECKER Canada. Alien8. Kranky
TIM HECKER first made a name for himself under his JETONE alias (which he besides resuscitated recently), actor of an idm or minimal techno music with ambiences being very reminiscent of those found in shoegaze rock. He rather quickly wanted to push his journeys further into the ambient side, while trying to find his own sequel to “MY BLOODY VALENTINE’s lost trajectories”, among others. What we have here is a fractured showgaze-ambient, where glitch and deconstruction play an important role.
As well, TIM HECKER is not afraid of venturing a bit into noise, a noisethat is always well-controlled, and which never overrides the essentially emotional purpose of his music. An artist who is able to surprise and enchant the listener every time, be it on disc or live. Some die-hard
experimental emotion, but overall, the ideal complement and companion, in a more ?digitalized? way, to the 2 artists above.

THISQUIETARMY | Canada. ThisQuietArmy.
To give the pitch of the evening and to start it in a really beautiful fashion, our first guest: THISQUIETARMY! ERIC QUACH was especially known for his contribution to Montreal project
DESTROYALLDREAMERS, a collective that is closely linked to the post-rock and shoegaze scenes, and which has been causing a great sensation since its arrival on the scene. THISQUIETARMY is a parallel unit whose main objective is the use of the guitar as the sole sound source, with, as added tactics, the creation of multiple combinations of effect boxes to
support and process the whole. ERIC QUACH also uses, in his ventures, a real-time looper to draw his sound frescos, which are subjected to various processes: multitracking, layering, decomposition, reconstruction an ever-evolving work, which leads to an instrumental music that is accessible and authentic, without any pretension and luminous. He will demonstrate us his savoir-faire on the spot, in real-time, with sonorities that are complex but at the same time stripped-down, lively and raw. He also has his own label, also called THISQUIETARMY.
