REPTILJAN: Archaeodermophagia CDR

June 29th, 2007 by ALT+165

After a two-year hibernation, REPTILJAN is back! The old lizard has shed its skin again and perhaps aged somewhat, but the same explosive power remains. Archaeodermophagia is devoid of fractured beats that dominated The Hellbender Suite (2005), focusing on howling distortion, pummeling low-end rumble and piercing feedback. This recalls the beginnings of Reptiljan (self-titled debut, 2002), hence the title’s reference to eating old skin, perhaps?

Whereas the previous works were boldly digital, Archaeodermophagia was conjured through completely analog means. Distancing itself from “plain noise” there is an obvious compositional (even if spontaneously so)
element at work, that defines the structure and space, and invites in hints of melody and a spectrum of emotions wider than the joyous rage that acts on the surface.

The disc comes in hand-made sleeve that an uninitiated bypasser commented, “What are you doing? That’s fucking disgusting! Is that hair in there or what? I don’t know what you’re trying to achieve but it certainly isn’t art!” …each sleeve is more or less unique. Edition of 104 copies, hand-numbered. Includes certificate of authenticity.

ABOUT THE LABEL

Some Place Else - for the Moosickally Adventurous

Some Place Else is the prime supplier of Experimental, Esoteric, Eccentric and Electronick musick in Finland. We started already in 1994 under the name Demonosound. In 1997 we refocused our vision, changed the name to Some Place Else and invested more thought, love and money into the label.

Some Place Else functions as a record label, mailorder, record shop and distributor. Our deepest meaning is to provide a channel for a selected network of artists to realize and release their creations. Thus, Some Place Else is first and foremost a record label - all the other activity takes place mostly to support the label and fund the new releases.

In 2004-2006 we organized gigs and events in Turku, Finland, primarily in our own shop & performance spaces, namely Living Room (2004-2005) and Ostium (2005-2007).

In 2007, Some Place Else celebrates its tenth year of activity. Our feet firmly on solid ground, our antlers pointing high up to the distant stars, we stand on the brink of tremendous change. The leap we are taking is the ultimate act of devotion to the Art we practise. We will optimise our resources and environment to maximise our capabilities in the act of creation and the sharing of its results. In mundane terms this means we decided to leave the city and re-establish our activity in the countryside, for more time and space to focus on the important things.

Some Place Else has survived in the underground, though sometimes neglected and misunderstood even in our own psychological neighbourhood. We do ok and feel fine, and getting better all the time (thank you for asking). We have been here for a while, doing what we do and enjoying it all. We aim to stick around. We are in no hurry.

We Will Not Wash Away.
