Summer nights in Los Angeles are about to get hotter thanks to A&M Entertainment’s “Latin Music Invasion 2010” concert series. Come July 22nd, Southern California Spanish rock devotees will have the unique opportunity to catch a live performance by one of Mexico’s prominent rock en español exports, Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro. Fresh off the stage of Mexico’s Vive Latino, the band will headline one of the “Latin Music Invasion” events on Thursday, July 22nd at Hollwood’s Key Club.

The group is embarking on a tour that both promotes their latest album, Fantasma, and celebrates their impressive 20-year repertoire. With a sound that is an eclectic combination of rock, ska, pop, thrash, funk, reggae and post-punk, Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro fans on either side of the border can expect nothing less than the “surreal” live performances the Mexico City natives are known for.

“We’re very excited to have this incredibly talented group of musicians be a part of A&M Entertainment’s ‘Latin Music Invasion’, which is a concert series that plays a major role in the Los Angeles alterlatino music scene,” stated Melinda Torres, founder of A&M Entertainment. “Víctimas helped shape an entire musical movement here in LA, and I think it’s a wonderful nod to our musical past to have them headline one of the Latin Music Invasion shows.”

With the tour, the release of a new album –three tracks from which are getting plenty of rotation on Mexican airwaves– a live performance in March for a silent film screened by the Mexican Cineteca Nacional, and a gig in April closing one of the stages at Mexico’s most important music festival, Vive Latino, Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro are celebrating their 20-year musical trajectory as befits any group that has been a formative part of a major musical movement.

Tickets for A&M Entertainment’s “Latin Music Invasion” concert featuring Víctimas del Doctor Cerebro are on sale now at Key Club.
One of the more colorful and charismatic pop artists to emerge in Mexico during the early 2000s, Natalia Lafourcade will be performing @ The Conga Room, Jan 28th. Natalia Lafourcade debuted in 2003 with a fascinating solo effort before switching to a rock band format, Natalia y la Forquetina, and proved herself worthy of acclaim in whatever guise she chose.

Born Natalia Lafourcade Silva on February 26, 1984, in Mexico City, she took an early interest in music, for her parents were musicians. She knew at an early age that she wanted to become an artist, and over the course of her childhood she studied accordingly: painting, theater, and music, including such instruments as flute, guitar, piano, and saxophone, as well as singing. Though she attended a Catholic middle school, Instituto Anglo Español, Lafourcade spent several years living with her mother in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, where they both studied music. Some of her cited contemporary influences are Fiona Apple, Björk, Café Tacuba, and Zuco 103.

With time, Lafourcade was taken under the wing of Loris Ceroni, a well-regarded Italian producer perhaps best known for his work with Alejandra Guzman. Recording at Le Dune Estudios in Italy, he produced the bulk of what would later be released by Sony Norte as Natalia Lafourcade (2003), with the remainder of the album produced by Aureo Baqueiro back in Mexico. An eclectic, free-spirited album encompassing everything from gentle, bossa nova-style acoustic guitar to hard-hitting dance beats, often within the same song, Natalia Lafourcade is a fascinating album of pop confetti anchored by well-written songs and charismatic singing. It found a captive audience in Mexico, generating four hit singles (“En el 2000,” “Busca un Problema,” “Elefantes,” “Te Quiero Dar”), topping the album chart, and going three-times platinum. Moreover, it wasn’t only consumers that were captivated by the album, as Lafourcade earned four Latin Grammy nominations for her debut effort: Song of the Year (“En el 2000″), Best New Artist, Best Rock Solo Vocal Album, and Best Rock Song (“En el 2000″). She also earned a standard Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album.

In 2004, the following year, Lafourcade assembled a four-piece rock band, Natalia y la Forquetina, also comprised of Alonso (drums, programming), Chanona (guitar, bass guitar), and Yuno (accordion, keyboards). Fernando Eimbcke, a filmmaker who had directed the video for “En el 2000,” invited Lafourcade and her new band to record a song for the soundtrack to his film Temporada de Patos (2004). The song, “Un Pato,” is a reinterpretation of a traditional bossa nova, “O Pato,” and it marked the debut of Natalia y la Forquetina. Meanwhile, the band worked on a full-length album with producer Emmanuel del Real, aka Meme, from the band Café Tacuba, and also with Baqueiro once again.

The resulting album, Casa (2005), is indeed the product of a genuine rock band, with surging electric guitars driving many of the songs. Though considerably more one-dimensional than Lafourcade’s self-titled debut, and not quite as successful, Casa nonetheless spun off some hits, topped the album chart, went platinum in Mexico, and won a Latin Grammy for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Furthermore, the band arrangement facilitated Lafourcade’s emergence as a concert performer, and indeed, she took Natalia y la Forquetina on the road, touring extensively throughout Mexico over the course of a year’s time. Their last show was August 18, 2006, after which point Lafourcade disbanded la Forquetina with plans to resume her solo career. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

ENERGY ZONE & Old Europa Cafe

sono lieti di presentare

VI CONGRESSO POST INDUSTRIALE

sabato 14 febbraio 2oo9
dalle ore 20.00

COMBICHRIST HITS THE ROAD

With Support from Wes Borland’s Black Light Burns New album ‘Today We Are All Demons’ out on Jan. 20th

New York, NY – COMBICHRIST will be taking their patented electro-industrial sound on the road to support their fourth album Today We Are All Demons which is set for release on January 20, 2009. Kicking off on January 14th at Fort Lauderdale’s Club Premier, the tour will include direct support from Black Light Burns featuring Wes Borland (Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson). Tour dates below.

Combichrist’s much lauded and respected live shows are, as Crypt Magazine describes, “known for tons of energy, blood, and a rock n’ roll attitude.” BlogCritics also warns that it’s “not for the faint of heart – you wouldn’t bring your grandmother to this show.” The live incarnation is comprised of Combichrist mastermind Andy LaPlegua, longtime live drummer Joe Letz (Amen, Genitorturers, Emigrate), keyboardist Z_Marr (Hell Trash) and Trevor Friedrich (Eighteen Visions, Imperative Reaction).

Born from the metal and hardcore soul of Norway, Combichrist is the brainchild of Andy LaPlegua, an icon within the industrial/dance scene. Creating music for much of his life, he began his musical empire fronting two highly respected (but very Norway-inclusive) bands: Fleshfire and Lash Out. While playing with Lash Out, Andy felt constricted within the organic side of hardcore and metal and decided it was time to branch out work in electronics and dance beats. As a result, he began the influential and seminal band Icon Of Coil, and released three groundbreaking and acclaimed albums through Philadelphia’s Metropolis Records. Feeling the need to expand into a darker and harder direction, he created Combichrist, which has become one of the label’s top selling artists.

Tourmates for this run, Black Light Burns released their CD/DVD combo package, Cover Your Heart & The Anvil Pants Odyssey, earlier this year. Featuring odd and unorthodox covers of songs by a diverse group of artists including Duran Duran, P.J. Harvey, The Swans, and Sisters of Mercy, this collection has been described by Revolver as a “revealing look into the mind of one of one of heavy music’s most creative headcases.”

Even though the band’s line-up have changed, bad habits can’t. The fact of the matter is acts like this are like a bad disease that refuses to go away even when you intent to cure your old goth tendencies.

One of England’s leading “goth” bands of the 1980s, the Sisters of Mercy return with their signature hybrid of metal and psychedelia, often incorporating dance beats. Deep-voiced singer Andrew Eldritch is still at the center of the band, with a rotating lineup.

Café Tacvba

August, 22 2008 at Greek Theater
Located in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, California.

45 Grave, (also known as .45 Grave) formed in 1979, is an American punk rock band from Los Angeles, CA, noted for their influential roles in the Horror Rock, horror punk and deathrock genres. The original group broke up in 1985 but vocalist Dinah Cancer has revived the band in recent times.

The band was formed in Los Angeles, California during the punk rock movement. The original lineup consisted of Dinah Cancer on vocals, Paul Cutler on guitar, Rob Ritter (also known as Rob Graves of The Bags) on bass, and Don Bolles (of The Germs) on drums. The band evolved out of an industrial music band called Vox Pop, who recorded two singles and played around the Los Angeles area, specifically in the punk institution the Masque. Vox Pop contained all of the members of 45 Grave as well as others, such as Jeff Dahl. Vox Pop continued to coexist with 45 Grave until early 1981. The band’s name, despite rumors to the contrary, was lifted from a button.

In 1980, 45 Grave recorded their first song, “Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood”, included on the LAFMS (Los Angeles Free Music Society) art rock compilation album, “Darker Skratcher”. The song is a cover version of the cult favorite originally done by “Don Hinson And The Rigamorticians” on their 1964 album release “Monster Dance Party”. Don Hinson at the time was a popular radio personality in Las Vegas, Nevada (and later for 20 years in Los Angeles, California). Mr. Hinson recorded the song in the wake of Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s 1962 novelty song hit “Monster Mash” hoping to emulate the latter song’s success and have an international hit record. Both “Monster Mash” and the Don Hinson original recording of “Riboflavin Flavored, Non-Carbonated, Poly-Unsaturated Blood” were produced by noted novelty song record producer Gary S. Paxton of Skip & Flip. The 45 Grave recording went on to achieve cult status and is a signature song during the bands live shows. 45 Grave members appeared as extras in Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott.

Early on, the band were playing The Consumers songs that Cutler had written, with lyrics changed to fit Cancer’s singing style. They then wrote the songs that would be released on their first 7″, “Black Cross”, and a fast paced punk song called “Party Time”.

Despite never achieving major success, 45 Grave are recognised as being one of the first Amercian Gothic bands, pre-dating the formation of Christian Death. Allmusic guide cites them as a top artist in the Goth rock genre.

Influences Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Red Flag, Camouflage, Nitzer Ebb, Covenant, Apoptygma, Melotron, S.P.O.K., Underworld and many other fantastic Synth-pop and Techno acts that have made our brain soak in elctronic frequencies since 1985. Sounds Like Future-pop electronica with a hint of EBM basslines and sequences, melodic vocals and techno beats. In other words, ELECTROVÖT!!!

With an unpredicatble spectacle that’s equally eye-candy and ear-charming, this great audio-visual band makes all stereotypes to fail. Re-defining the old-school labels of synth-pop, Gram Rabbit Rocks!. An intense hybrid of sounds a la Devo and NIN with a little darky twist that still is fresh, upbeat and sticks to you. A show not to be missed!

Twisted synth-pop quartet GRAM RABBIT announce upcoming dates in California, Utah and Idaho this summer, with more to be added. The first date will be this week’s special Independence Day show at the band’s hometown club Pappy and Harriet’s, presented by Los Angeles radio station KCRW. From the unlikely haven of Joshua Tree, California, GRAM RABBIT synthesizes an original blend of rock, country and techno, featuring socio-politically charged lyrics with a playful edge.

Drawing comparisons to Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and the Queens of the Stone Age in an early feature written by Los Angeles Times’ Richard Cromelin, GRAM RABBIT have been critical darlings and concert favorites for years since their first appearances. They have received significant airplay on INDIE 103.1 Los Angeles, and have been championed by nationally-renowned station KCRW. The band has mesmerized crowds at Coachella – where their CDs sold out at the event’s Virgin Megastore stand – as well as San Diego’s Street Spirit festival, and London’s Wireless festival.

The LA Weekly declares, “Gram Rabbit offer up in spectacle exactly what they do in sound: music that reminds you of everything from eerie desert twilights to Carter-family country and then again sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard.” In a special blog, suicidegirls.com editor Helen Jupiter writes, “Gram Rabbit is the music I’d been looking for, even though I didn’t realize I was looking.”

Live performances find lead singer Jessica Von Rabbit decked out in dishy stage costumes and bunny ears – if not a full rabbit mask – alongside guitarist/vocalist Todd Rutherford, also dressed to the nines; the two appear as if the evil descendants of folk couple Ian & Sylvia. The founding members are joined on stage by Ethan Allen on guitar and Hillary Hack on electronics. Shows have been known to include audience participation, scantily clad dancers, and a rotating lineup of backup musicians. The band reports that the upcoming shows will include “ear candy, eye candy, and a pot of strange brew.”

Gram Rabbit will be playing material from their latest release, Radio Angel & The RobotBeat, produced by guitarist Allen (Kristin Hersh, 50 Foot Wave, Luscious Jackson). The album features the appropriately titled “I Wear The Ears,” a call-to-arms track with a slowly sinister electronic beat augmented by clock tower bells, string samples and Rabbit’s devilish command to “Activate your frontal lobe/disengage your anal probe.”

In regards to the new shows, Jessica offers up a couplet, “We’re hot and weird with that desert soul/but in the end we’re still rock and roll.”

Boyd Rice is one of the most provocative and debatable underground figures of the post-punk era. A pioneering noise musician and countercultural maven, from the late 1970s to the present he has worked in an array of capacities, playing the roles of: musician, performer, artist, photographer, essayist, interviewer, editor, occult researcher, filmmaker, actor, orator, deejay, gallery curator and tiki bar designer, among others.

First coming to prominence as an avant-garde audio experimentalist (recording under the moniker NON), Rice was a seminal founder of the first wave of industrial music in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, through collaborations with Re/Search Publications, Rice further endeared himself to the underground with recountings of his uproarious pranks and the promotion of “incredibly strange” cult films. Rice’s influence on subculture was further exerted through his forerunning exhibition of found photographs and readymade thrift store art, as well as his adamant endorsements of outsider music, tiki culture and bygone pop culture in general.

By the 1990s, however, Rice’s underground acclaim had been turned on its ear as a result of his public associations with nefarious figures both infamous and obscure. These included friendships and ideological collusion with the likes of cult leader Charles Manson and Church Of Satan founder Anton LaVey, among others. Rice sparked further controversy through public flirtations with “Nazi” aesthetics and fascist ideology, a flaunted disregard for political correctness, and an espousal of antisocial doctrines such as Satanism, Social Darwinism and elitist misanthropy. The culmination of these affiliations and endorsements established Rice as one of the 1990s’ foremost countercultural antagonists and provocateurs, alienating many of his erstwhile fans. The 2000s saw Rice turning away from the culturally proscribed (and its attendant controversy), and instead to esoteric occult research, the co-founding of an art movement and the design of his own tiki bar. Rice continues to explore these and other realms of artistic and musical expression.

Alternately amusing, insightful, confrontational and offensive, Boyd Rice has proven one of the most consistently influential and contentious characters of the last 30 years of American counterculture. He’s covered an incredibly prolific amount of artistic, conceptual and ideological ground, and his work continues to profoundly affect the countercultural underground at large, inspiring and enraging in equal measure.
