Brasil Cultura Funk is based on the idea that it’s the local Brazilian communities’ responsibility to expose and celebrate its thriving art scene beyond its beloved bossa nova and Carnaval. With the current popularity of artists like Céu and Seu Jorge, who serve up unique and hip versions of samba and soul, host Carla Rigolin Hassett is betting on Los Angelinos wanting to know what else “we have to offer.” Resident band MUAMBA (samba-funk) and resident DJ Sergio Mielniczenko (KPFK/Brazilian Hour) present local and traveling guest bands, DJs, visual artists, and other Brazilian and Latin cultural showings on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. The Brazilian Hour, a well-renowned international radio program launched in 1978, has been continuously produced by the cultural sector of the Brazilian Consulate of Los Angeles. The program will initiate a new phase with the launching of a user-friendly and informative website that will include programming in 4 languages, Portuguese, Spanish, English and French. The site will also provide a novelty aspect that includes the Brazilian Hour Internet TV, presenting original music and interviews and calendar of events. One of the newest features available will be the Brazilian Hour web radio offering 24 hour music selections and special features on composers, music styles and new Brazilian music releases.
